This paper reports qualitative and quantitative data from a study of 'choice' between contemplating the use (but ultimately not invoking) law to coerce treatment of severe anorexia nervosa (AN) patients as against actually obtaining coercive orders, along with data regarding subsequent choices made between adult guardianship and mental health (and other) avenues of legal coercion. The strategic option of lodging an application for an order, which is then withdrawn before hearing, is also examined, along with the nature of the tribunal hearings when applications proceed. All of these settings are shown to yield rich material for a Therapeutic Jurisprudence analysis.
