Ibram X. Kendi’s book, How to Be An Antiracist suggests that Americans are either racists or antiracists. Other authors similarly point to racial bias by the White population as a continuing as well as historic part of American society. I suggest that while racism may be real, pinning labels on populations is not a practical approach to needed progress. Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr. were highly influential in promoting progress because though they excoriated evils, they didn’t attack people and recognized and espoused positive values for American society.
