Abstract

We propose an index of working from home (WfH) capacity for industries and counties in the German economy. Our analysis draws on individual-level survey information and administrative employment statistics. We find that overall 56 percent of jobs are suitable for part-time or fulltime remote work. WfH-compatible jobs are typically located in urban areas, characterized by cognitive and PC-intensive tasks, and performed by high-skilled workers. We validate our index by showing that it is a strong predictor of industry-level variation in WfH during the Covid-19 crisis. Our measure is therefore a useful input for regional or sectoral analyses investigating the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and labor market adjustments during and beyond the crisis.
