Abstract

Although research on resilience and supporting homeless students have made great strides in recent years, many districts still struggle to provide basic services. This mixed-method examination of one mid-sized, high-poverty southern city suggests that educating public school teachers remains an unevenly distributed — but, we argue, vital — means of promoting homeless student adaptation and success in school. Most teachers in our study had not received any training specific to the challenges of this population. Furthermore, our interviews uncovered that many teachers feel emotionally taxed by witnessing their students’ struggles. We discuss how our research informs directions for research, policy, and practice.
