Abstract

The objective of this paper is to assess the impact of the expansion of road network on Brazilian agricultural production, particularly with regard to the Cerrado region. After a brief report on the evolution of the road transport system, the paper presents evidence of the contemporaneous growth of the road system and the agricultural frontier, using geographical information system mapping. The magnitude of the impact of inter-regional transportation costs and network density on production growth is econometrically estimated and analyzed.
