German Abstract: Die Währungsreform am 20. Juni 1948 bildete zusammen mit einer umfassenden Liberalisierung der Preise sowie eine Monopolkontrolle die Grundlage für das westdeutsche Wirtschaftswunder, das fortan das wirtschaftliche Rückgrat für den europäischen Integrationsprozess war. 70 Jahre später ist von den Grundprinzipien der Sozialen Marktwirtschaft wenig übriggeblieben. Eine zunehmend expansive Geldpolitik der Europäischen Zentralbank untergräbt das Wachstum und den sozialen Zusammenhalt in Europa, was die politische Stabilität in Europa gefährdet. Um die wirtschaftliche, politische und gesellschaftliche Stabilität Europas sicherzustellen, bedarf es einer Rückbesinnung auf die Grundprinzipien von Walter Eucken und Ludwig Erhard.

German Abstract: The German currency reform on 20 June 1948, together with a comprehensive liberalisation of prices as well as monopoly control, formed the basis for the West German economic miracle, which became the economic backbone of the European integration process. 70 years later, little remains of the basic principles of the social market economy. An increasingly expansive monetary policy of the European Central Bank undermines growth and social cohesion in Europe, which puts political stability at risk. To ensure economic, political and social stability in Europe, a return to the principles of Walter Eucken und Ludwig Erhard is necessary.
