The distinctions between behavior and institutions in the North or West as compared to the South figure prominently. For a large number of these questions the answers become ambiguous, and the ambiguity revolves around how one chooses to define "the South." As will become clear, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia are particularly important since they possess characteristics which make classifications difficult.
