The purpose of this note is to present thoughts and suggestions about case writing. The ideas and statements come from many sources and are intended to pool the wisdom and experience of current and past case writers. The note is not intended to be a prescription, for case writing is an art form requiring a sort of guided creativity that defies precise specification. Nevertheless, we hope that the ideas and suggestions presented here will be stimulating and help make the process of developing high-quality cases accessible and enjoyable.
Objectives of the Case Method
The case method takes many forms, and there are many strongly held views on just what it is and how it works. Whatever people believe it to be, however, it always seems to be described as a complex learning process. One reason for the complexity is that many things go on at once in most case discussions. The case method has, for example, at least five objectives, and while they are all usually present to some degree, their importance to the learning objective of a particular case or class varies with different subjects, settings, audiences, and kinds of cases. When writing cases, it is helpful to think about how important each of these five objectives is for a particular case and how the case can most effectively assist in a relevant objective's achievement.
1. Knowledge. Case discussion helps students gain knowledge about a subject, whether it is marketing, organization, ethics, or regression analysis. Although case discussion is perhaps an inefficient way to convey knowledge about a subject (lectures or readings are usually more efficient), the acquisition of knowledge is often an important outcome of the case method.
