Abstract

“Media General and the Balanced Scorecard (A) " (UVA-C-2283) describes the impetus for and the process of implementing a balanced scorecard (BSC) in a large, publicly held, multimedia news organization. The B case (UVA-C-2284) presents a situation where a business-unit manager turns to his region's BSC to evaluate the possible reasons for a quarterly revenue shortfall. These cases can be used in an undergraduate, graduate, or executive-education setting to introduce the BSC topic.

MEDIA GENERAL AND THE BALANCED SCORECARD (A)

In June 2000, Bill McDonnell, director of budgeting and planning, helped lead the enterprise-wide implementation of the balanced scorecard (BSC) at Media General, Inc. The balanced scorecard initiative was undertaken with the intention of breaking down the silos between Media General's three separate divisions and supporting its new corporate strategy that focused on media convergence. One of the largest challenges McDonnell and the company faced was how to ensure that this would not be perceived as just “another management fad.” Nearly five years later in early 2005 as McDonnell looked back on the implementation process, he wondered what more could be done to make sure the BCS was an integral part of the everyday operations of Media General.
