Abstract

The issue of bank mergers and takeovers is always hotly debated and more so in the context of publicly owned banks. Indian public sector banking is at cross roads today on this issue as as new opportunities arise in terms of clients, products, geagraphies and in terms of strategy and structure. In this paper the potential costs and benefts of merging public sector banks are studied. The future is envisioned and implementation options are discussed.
