Abstract

Morphological deformity in fishes has been reported in various species and was attributed to various factors viz, nutritional deficiency, stressed conditions in the ecosystem and genetic factors. Polyploidy has also been reported by various workers as one of the reason in explaining the occurrence of morphological deformities in fishes and may be caused spontaneously in natural conditions to increase genetic divergence and heterozygosity in a population.

The present study reports for the first time, the occurrence of morphological deformity in some female wild Clarias batrachus in a natural ecosystem of Tripura, Northeast India (Approximate Longitude 92◦ E, Latitude 23◦ N). A deviation has been observed in these individuals from the overall length-weight characteristics as calculated by the equation log10 W= log10 a b log10 L, for the species isolated from the same ecosystem. The erythrocyte examination also suggest toward the occurrence of polyploidy in these samples. Isolation of more samples of the species with morphological deformities from their natural habitat and confirmation of their ploidy level is of utmost importance.
